Reformer pilates · Voorbeeldstad

Getting stronger takes time.

Reformer pilates in an atelier with six machines. You train with no more than five others, on springs that suit your body, with a teacher who sees every rep.

  • 6 reformers
  • 50 minutes
  • €20 trial class

Our atelier

Six reformers, one teacher, and nobody in a hurry.

At Kern six wooden reformers stand in a row, with the window on the street side. No more will fit, and we don’t want more either. With six people the teacher sees whether your shoulders creep up, whether your pelvis stays put and whether you really breathe out as you bring the carriage back.

Pilates isn’t a workout where you do as many reps as possible. It’s about the quality of every movement. Five times well is worth more than twenty times half-done. That’s why we work slowly, and that’s why it’s harder than it looks.

Five times well is worth more than twenty times half-done.

You don’t need to be supple or sporty. If you’ve never been on a reformer, start with a trial class. The teacher shows you the machine, sets the footbar to your height and explains what the springs do.

After a few weeks you notice it outside the studio: you sit up straighter at your desk, lift your shopping differently and stand more steadily on one leg. That’s your core.

Technique

Lighter is not easier.

On a reformer, springs set the resistance. You’d think fewer springs means less work. It’s the other way round. With a red spring the carriage pushes you back and catches you. With one yellow spring you have to keep everything steady yourself.

  • Yellow, light. A quarter spring. Little help from the machine: you keep everything steady.
  • Blue, half. A half spring. For arm work, the Hundred and many core exercises.
  • Green, three-quarter. Just under full. For leg work where you still want to feel some control.
  • Red, full. A whole spring. For footwork and jumps: the carriage catches you.

With every class and every service on this site you can see which springs you mainly use. The colour and number of springs tell you how tough the class will be.
