I’m Carlijn.
I look at the light first.
I’m Carlijn. I’ve been photographing weddings since 2014 and I still look at the light first and the camera second. You get photos in which you recognise yourself, not a stiff pose.
My first wedding was my sister’s, in 2014. I had a second-hand camera and no idea what I was doing. What I did know: the best photo of that day wasn’t the group photo, but my father in the kitchen wiping away his tears with a tea towel.
It never left me. Since then I’ve photographed around twenty-five weddings a year, and no more. That way I have enough time for every couple: for the introductory meeting, for the planning and for the editing afterwards.
My studio is an old upstairs flat on Voorbeeldstraat, with tall north-facing windows. That’s where we have coffee when you come to meet me, and where I edit every photo by hand.
“The best photo of the day is rarely the one someone asked for.”
What I pay attention to

The light
In every room I first look at where the window is. A room with side light is worth its weight in gold while getting ready.

The people around you
Grandad, the witness, the ring bearer. You barely see them that day, I do.

Calm
I don’t arrange anything that doesn’t need arranging. If you’ve forgotten about me by midnight, I’ve done my job well.
