The weather
finishes it

We set a sculpture down grey. Rain, sun and frost do the rest. Corten steel only rusts on the surface: that layer seals itself and protects the steel underneath.

  1. Day 0Mill scale

    Blue-grey and smooth, as the steel comes from the rolling mill. That’s how we set the sculpture down.

  2. Week 2First rust

    After a few showers orange spots appear. It looks a bit messy for a while; that’s normal.

  3. Month 3Orange

    The whole sculpture is a warm orange. The protective layer is starting to close.

  4. Year 1Rust brown

    Deeper and darker. Now it hardly sheds anything.

  5. Year 5Velvet

    Purple-brown and matt as velvet. It stays like this for decades.

From chalk line
to work number

Every sculpture starts with a chalk line on the concrete floor, full size. Then we cut the plates, bend them into shape and weld them together. The grinding takes longest.

Come and look,
rain or shine

Behind the barn is a sculpture garden with thirty sculptures in the grass. Feel free to wander, touch and take photos. Coffee is in the barn. Can you only make Monday or Tuesday? Call, and we’ll open the barn for you.
