Melted old gold glowing orange in a crucible under a torch flame, dark studio
Family gold · in the crucible

Family gold doesn’t melt away. It melts into something new.

A box of gold that nobody wears: almost everyone has one. This is how it becomes something you wear every day again.

  1. 6,4 g

    Weighing

Your old gold goes on the scales while you sit there. Grandma’s ring, a broken chain, a single earring: it all counts. You get the weight on paper.

  2. 585

    Testing

On the touchstone I see how much gold is in it. Usually it’s 14 carat, sometimes 18. I carefully remove any stones first. You get them back, or we set them again.

  3. ± 900 °C

    Melting

In the crucible, under the torch flame, everything becomes one again. The gold glows orange and pulls together into a shining drop.

  4. 1 bar

    Casting and rolling

I pour the gold into a bar mould. Then I roll and draw it until it’s exactly as thick as the design needs.

  5. size 54

    Forging

I bend the bar round the ring mandrel. I solder the seam, hammer the ring to size and file, sand and polish until it shines.

  6. GV · 585

    Marking

Inside I strike my hallmark: the bullfinch and the fineness. That way everyone knows, even fifty years from now, where this ring was made.

An hour at the workbench

I work by appointment, because there’s a flame burning at my bench and stones of a few millimetres lying about. It also keeps things calm: when you’re here, you’re the only one.

What we do together

  • Hold gold, platinum and stones in your hand
  • Weigh your old gold, if you bring it
  • A first sketch, while you watch

The price of this hour

A week later there’s a finished sketch, with what it will cost. Only after your yes do I pick up the saw.
