What they asked for

The school is named after the little owl and wanted three on its new green playground. Sturdy enough to climb on, without a single sharp edge.

2

The making

The top year drew the owls. We turned the three best drawings into owls. In the chest of each owl is a plate with the children’s names, stamped in with letter punches.

3

On site

The owls stand on oak posts among the ferns. They are now dark orange. At break time there’s always someone sitting next to them.

How it stands
there now

Patina right now: orange. The whole sculpture is a warm orange. The protective layer is starting to close.

  1. Day 0Mill scale

Blue-grey and smooth, as the steel comes from the rolling mill. That’s how we set the sculpture down.

  2. Week 2First rust

After a few showers orange spots appear. It looks a bit messy for a while; that’s normal.

  3. Month 3Orange

The whole sculpture is a warm orange. The protective layer is starting to close.

  4. Year 1Rust brown

Deeper and darker. Now it hardly sheds anything.

  5. Year 5Velvet

Purple-brown and matt as velvet. It stays like this for decades.
