Weighed, forged
and marked.
Three pieces that came off my workbench this year. With the story behind them, the gold in them and the final price.

Sheet 0417Forged by themselves in the day workshop: yellow gold and platinum, with the same hammered finish.
Rosalie and Roel’s wedding rings
The request
Rosalie wanted yellow gold, Roel definitely wanted something grey. They both wanted to forge their own ring, but rings that belonged together.
The idea
Two metals, one hammered finish. Rosalie chose yellow gold, Roel platinum. Both got the same fine hammered texture, so you can see at once they’re a pair.
At the workbench
One Saturday they sat side by side at my bench. They sawed, soldered and hammered each other’s ring. I kept an eye on the flame and did the final polish.
Ready
After the wedding they came back for the engraving: the date, by hand, so you have to take the ring off to see it.

Sheet 0452An engagement ring with a light blue Ceylon sapphire in a low setting.
A sapphire for Yara
The request
Jelmer wanted to ask Yara to marry him. He was sure of one thing: no white stone. Yara always wears blue.
The stone
I laid five sapphires on the skin under the loupe. Jelmer chose the lightest, an oval Ceylon sapphire that turns almost purple in the sun.
At the workbench
I kept the setting low, so the ring doesn’t catch on a jumper and later sits snugly next to a wedding ring. Six fine claws, raised by hand.
Ready
We guessed the ring size from a ring in her jewellery box. It fitted straight away. She said yes, Jelmer told me later on the phone.

Sheet 04689.3 grams of family gold remade into a pendant, and a little ring for the daughter.
Grandma’s ring became a pendant
The request
Marloes had a little box from her mother. A thin wedding ring, a chain with a kink, a single earring. She wore none of it, but she couldn’t give it away either.
The gold
Together we weighed it all: 9.3 grams of 14 carat. Enough for a sturdy pendant, with some left over.
At the workbench
I melted, cast and forged the gold into a round pendant. The old wedding ring comes back as the rim around it.
Ready
From the 2.6 grams left over I made a slim little ring for her daughter. The same gold, two generations.
