About us

Moestuinmeester is Rinske Weijers: grower, teacher in the trial garden and someone who doesn't mind if you let something die.

First the market garden. Now your garden.

Rinske grew up with a father who was at the allotment every Saturday. As a child she mostly found it dirty. Only when she went to work on an organic market garden after her studies did the penny drop: vegetables you sow yourself taste different.

After eight years among the greenhouses and fields she started Moestuinmeester in 2018. First with a course for neighbours, in her own back garden. Now with a trial garden on Voorbeeldstraat, where the courses are held and where you can come and look on Saturdays.

“I don't teach you how it should be done. I teach you how to make it work.”

She works alone. For the builds in March and April one or two regular helpers join in. So at the chat, the build and the course you always see the same face.

Our four habits

No rules for the sake of rules. They save work and the vegetables grow better for it.

No digging

A layer of compost on top every year. The soil life does the rest, and you have fewer weeds.

Organic seed

From Dutch seed growers. With many varieties you can save your own seed.

Peat-free soil

Topsoil with compost from the region. No peat from peatlands.

No poison

Flowers among the vegetables attract insects that eat aphids. Nets keep the rest out.

From kitchen table to harvest basket

This is how it goes from appointment to harvest. With the course and the coaching it works the same, you just do more yourself.

1

Chat

At your kitchen table and in your garden. Sun, space and your favourite vegetables are all covered. Free, about forty-five minutes.

2

Plan

Rinske draws your vegetable garden and makes a sowing calendar: what goes where, and in which month.

3

Build

In one day the beds are up, the soil is in and the first plants are ready.

4

Harvest

With the course or a monthly visit you pick your first radish after four weeks.

The trial garden

Behind Voorbeeldstraat 1 are twelve beds, a four-metre greenhouse and a compost heap that never stops getting warm. This is where the courses are, and where we try out new varieties before we put them in your bed.

From April to October you're welcome to drop in on Saturdays between 10:00 and 13:00.

Come and say hello in the trial garden?

A chat at your kitchen table costs nothing. Rinske looks at your garden or balcony and tells you which vegetables want to grow there.
