About us

About Jolien, Jildou and the studio

Vol & Vrij isn’t a shop. It’s a quiet room with one chair, two specialists and all the time in the world.

Portrait of Jolien, a woman of about fifty with a short ash-blonde cut (a natural hairpiece), sitting on a linen chair in a bright private studio, soft morning light from the side, warm open smile, calm background with a shelf of hairpieces on wooden block heads

Jolien Grevelink, owner of Vol & Vrij.

“I knew how it felt. That was the start.”

Jolien had been a hairdresser in Voorbeeldstad for twenty years when her hair started coming out in clumps. The diagnosis: alopecia. Within a year she had lost all her hair, her eyebrows too.

“I saw the inside of a lot of hairpiece shops back then. Some were nice, but often I sat in a corner of a busy shop, with someone watching the clock. I thought: this can be calmer. This can be warmer.”

You can cry here, laugh, or just say nothing for a while. All fine.

Jolien retrained as a hairpiece specialist and opened Vol & Vrij in a converted practice room just outside the centre. She has now worn a hairpiece herself for twelve years, and most clients only notice when she tells them.

The name says what it’s about. Vol (full): a hairpiece that looks natural. Vrij (free): that you no longer think about it. You go outside, to work, to a party, and nobody asks a thing.

The two of us, for you

A room, not a shop

A bright room just outside the centre, furnished like a living room. With a big mirror, a shelf full of hairpieces and a coffee machine.

  • Own entrance

At the side of the building, with no shop window or sign on the street.

  • One client at a time

No waiting room. Whoever comes after you won’t see you.

  • Ground floor

Car by the side door, and you can come straight in with a wheelchair or walker.

How we work

Four calm steps to your hairpiece

From the first cup of coffee to the phone call two weeks later. You can stop or pause at any step.

  1. 1

    Introductory meeting

An hour, free. We talk first, look at your hair and scalp and tell you what’s possible.

  2. 2

    Choosing and trying on

Try on as many as you like, just us in the room. You’re welcome to bring someone.

  3. 3

    Fitted to you

We cut the hairpiece to shape on your head and show you how to put it on, wash it and care for it.

  4. 4

    Aftercare

After two weeks we call. Does something pinch or do you want it different? Then we simply adjust it, free of charge.
