Where it started
After 31 years the owner wanted to stop. His daughter had worked in the business for eight years and wanted to take it over, but how do you pay for a business your parents built?
The approach
We valued the business independently, so father and daughter both knew the price was fair. Part of the purchase price stayed in as a loan from the father, the rest came from the bank. With the tax adviser we arranged the business succession relief.
The outcome
The signature was in place on 1 January. The team heard the news from father and daughter together, and nobody left. The father is staying on for another year, on two fixed days.

“In a family transfer you talk about money and about father and daughter. You have to take both seriously.”
