The Bakker family didn’t want photos of everyone standing neatly side by side. They wanted the sea, the wind and the children as they really are: Wout, six, who can’t sit still, and Jip, three, who wants to see everything.

We met at a quarter to seven at the beach entrance. First looking for shells, then running from the waves. Only at the very end, when the children sat tired on a lap, did I take the photo for above the sofa.

The wind blew Jip’s hair in every direction. That exact picture now hangs in their hallway.
