Pruning, felling,inspecting,grinding.

Tree care in and around Voorbeeldstad. Pruning from the rope, sectional felling, tree safety inspections and stump grinding. Three climbers with a European Tree Worker certificate.

12–25 min the crown

Pruning and crown care

Dead wood out, the crown back in balance. From the rope, without a cherry picker on your lawn.

A well-pruned tree is one you don't notice. It's lighter, safer and has light in the crown again, but it doesn't look bare. We remove dead wood and crossing branches, reduce a crown that hangs over the roof, or lift a crown so you can walk underneath. With young trees we guide the growth, so less is needed later.

  • Formative pruning for young trees
  • Maintenance pruning and deadwooding
  • Crown reduction and crown lifting
  • Pollard willows and espaliers

from €145 including VAT, clean-up and removal of branches. See the guide prices

How it goes

  1. LookWe walk round the tree and agree what comes out. Too little rather than too much: what's off doesn't grow back.
  2. Tie inThe climber throws a line over a strong fork, pulls the climbing rope over it and climbs up. Two anchor points as soon as the saw starts.
  3. PruneWith a handsaw or a small top-handle saw, just outside the branch collar. That way the tree can seal the wound well itself.
  4. Clear upBranches go straight into the chipper. Keep the chips if you like: ideal under the hedge.

From the climber

At most a quarter of the leaves come off in one go. A tree you saw bare gets stressed and then sprouts wildly.

Sectional tree felling

Not enough room to fell it? Then we take the tree down piece by piece, on ropes.

In a back garden a tree never just falls over. There's a shed, a greenhouse or the neighbours' house. So we dismantle it: the climber saws from top to bottom, every piece hangs on a rope and the groundworker lowers it gently. The branches go straight into the chipper and we saw the trunk into logs you can keep for the stove.

  • Rigged down on ropes above roofs and greenhouses
  • Felling permit: we do the research
  • Trunk wood in logs or taken away
  • Branches chipped straight away

from €225 including VAT, clean-up and removal of branches. See the guide prices

How it goes

  1. PermitWe check whether you need an environmental permit for felling. If so, we apply for it.
  2. Cordon offWe cordon off the work area around the tree. Nobody comes in without a helmet, not even the neighbour.
  3. DismantleFrom top to bottom: every piece hangs on a rope and is lowered gently to the ground via a lowering device.
  4. TrunkWe only fell the last piece of trunk if there's room, or we lower it in sections.

From the climber

Between 15 March and 15 July we check the crown for nests. If a nest is in use, the saw waits. That's the law, and simply decent too.

Tree safety inspection (VTA)

Is your tree still sound? A certified inspection, with a tree report and advice on paper.

As the owner you're responsible for your tree, even if a branch falls on the neighbours' car in a storm. A tree safety inspection using the VTA method (Visual Tree Assessment) shows how healthy it is. We look at the crown, the trunk and the base, sound the trunk and put everything on a tree report. With advice and a timeframe, so you see which measure is needed and when.

  • Inspection using the VTA method
  • Tree report with findings and photos
  • Advice with a timeframe
  • Further testing with a resistance drill

€145 for the first tree including VAT, clean-up and removal of branches. See the guide prices

0 cm, bark62 cmsoft wood, 22–34 cmhealthy wood: high resistance
This is what a resistance drill reading looks like.

How it goes

  1. DistanceFirst the tree as a whole: is it leaning, is the crown one-sided, are there dead branches?
  2. TrunkWe sound the trunk with a rubber mallet. Hollow sounds different from healthy.
  3. BaseFungi, cracks, heaving soil: the base of the trunk tells the most.
  4. Tree reportFor each tree you get a report with findings, photos, advice and a timeframe.

From the climber

If we're in doubt, we test further with a resistance drill: a 1.5 mm needle that shows where the wood turns soft. The tree barely notices.

Stump grinding

The stump gone to 30 cm below ground level. Our grinder fits through an 80 cm gate.

After felling, a stump is left. It takes years to rot away and is in the way all that time. With the stump grinder we turn it into chips in an hour or two, including the thick root flares just below the grass. Then we fill the hole, so you can sow, pave or plant a new tree straight away.

  • Up to 30 cm below ground level
  • Root flares too
  • Chips taken away or left as mulch
  • Hole filled with topsoil

from €95 including VAT, clean-up and removal of branches. See the guide prices

How it goes

  1. AccessOur grinder is 78 cm wide. If it fits through your gate, we don't need to go through the house.
  2. GrindingThe cutting wheel grinds the stump and the thickest root flares to chips, to about 30 cm deep.
  3. ChipsYour choice: we take them away, or leave them as mulch in the border.
  4. FillingWe fill the hole with topsoil. Want to sow grass there? You can that same week.

From the climber

Beforehand we ask where cables and pipes run. Unknown? Then we file a KLIC request (the Dutch cable and pipe locator).

Climbing or a cherry picker?

Usually the rope. Sometimes the bucket.

We have no cherry picker to hire out, so we have no stake in it. In most gardens climbing is quicker, tidier and cheaper. On a busy street we sometimes hire one in.
