Chapter one · How it works
Twelve taps, hand-rolled bitterballen and the billiard table at the back.

At the long bar we pour twelve beers, from an ordinary pils to a strong tripel. We roll the bitterballen ourselves. At the back is the carom billiard table under a low copper lamp: free for guests. Thursday evening is billiards night, when the regulars play straight rail.

Chapter three · The billiard table
Three balls, one cue, no rush
At the back is a carom billiard table from 1938. No pockets, but three balls: white, yellow and red.
In carom your cue ball has to hit both other balls. Sounds easy. Just ask the regulars on Thursday evening. If you want to learn, they're happy to give you a few tips.
