What was there

A large back garden with mostly grass and a few old conifers. The owners wanted colour well into autumn, without weeding every week.

Designed garden in low evening light: swaying ornamental grasses and purple sage along a grey natural stone path, an oak pergola with a table and a beech hedge in the background

What we drew

Two long borders of 32 m² each along a lawn path, filled with grasses and perennials that follow on from each other. In winter the plumes and seed heads stay: then the garden still has shape.

“Two long borders of 32 m² each along a lawn path, filled with grasses and perennials that follow on from each other.”

How we built it

The conifers came out, the soil was loosened and improved with compost. We planted 1,180 perennials, seven per square metre, and mulched the borders with wood chips.
