About us

Two friends, one roaster and an oak table

Riemer and Doortje, friends since cookery school, started Bonenstaak in 2019. Riemer got hooked on roasting, Doortje on baking. Together they felt Voorbeeldstad deserved a coffee bar where you can taste where the coffee comes from.

Why Bonenstaak?

Riemer is 2.04 metres tall. At secondary school they already called him Bonenstaak (“beanpole”), and when we needed a name for a place full of beans, we did not have to think long. That is also why the bar is five centimetres higher than normal. Doortje stands on a crate.

We started in 2019 with a rented espresso machine and beans from a roaster in Amsterdam. Two years later our own roaster arrived. Since then you taste the coffee here the way we mean it.

The building is an old saddlery on the square. The table in the back room is made from the oak floorboards we took out.

“We wanted a place where you taste where your coffee comes from. And where the cake is from this morning.”

What we are strict about

Fair sourcing

We buy through importers who know the farmers and pay an average of €7.80 per kilo of green coffee. Well above the market price.

Local

Bread from bakery Korrel, milk and cheese from a farmer just outside town, apples from the Betuwe.

Little waste

Coffee grounds go to the mushroom grower. The food bank collects leftover cake.

Your team at the oak table?

The back room is there for meetings, birthdays and tastings. Sixteen seats, with coffee from the bar and lunch from Doortje.
